The 探花社区 System has of its “Heart to Heart” podcast series. Hosted by 探花社区 President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., the podcast features in-depth conversations with leaders, educators, researchers and alums and university partners who are making a difference across the state and beyond.
In this episode, Dr. Gold sits down with Dr. Neal Schnoor, the priority candidate to become the next chancellor of the 探花社区 at Kearney. Following a national search, the 探花社区 announced Dr. Schnoor as the priority candidate in late April. A Nebraska native, first-generation college student and former long-time UNK faculty member and administrator, Schnoor brings more than 30 years of experience in higher education leadership, instruction and strategic planning.
The conversation explores Dr. Schnoor’s rural Nebraska roots, leadership philosophy, and vision for UNK’s future.
For Dr. Schnoor, a Nebraska native and first-generation college graduate, the potential appointment represents a homecoming. Prior to his last role at California State University Long Beach and his current role at Northern State University in South Dakota, he spent two decades at UNK as a faculty member and senior advisor to the chancellor.
Dr. Schnoor reflected on the moment that began to shape his leadership philosophy: watching marching band students out on the field during his early years at UNK.
“I saw so many talented students standing there waiting for my instruction—students who were going to be young teachers and leaders,” he said. “I looked into a principle-centered leadership model and taught those students to focus on a vision of empowerment and accountability.”
Dr. Schnoor also reflected on some of the leadership lessons he has learned leading Northern State University, including the importance of relationship-building and strategic focus:
“I believe the greatest opportunities begin with visibility and building relationships.” he said. “It will be key to clarify a compelling vision and strategies and then focus on increasing enrollment and retention.”
As a first-generation student raised in a rural community, Dr. Schnoor has a deep connection to UNK’s mission to uplift students, their families and their communities.
“UNK has a very personalized approach to help our students succeed,” he said. “We want all students—especially first-generation students—to feel they’ve had the benefits of growing up in a family and community that experiences the benefits of higher education.”
If confirmed by the Board of Regents, Schnoor said his immediate priority as chancellor would be to listen deeply and build trust.
“I would like to use student feedback to ensure that we’re providing a truly student-centered educational experience,” he said. “We need to not only grow and retain students here at UNK, but retain our high school graduates in the state of Nebraska, as well.”
On the podcast, Dr. Gold reflected on Dr. Schnoor’s past and looked ahead to the future:
“As someone who's walked the halls of UNK as an educator—and now may become its next chancellor—his commitment to students, faculty and staff and Kearney community shines through,” he said.
“UNK, Kearney and Nebraska are home,” Dr. Schnoor said. “I am so excited to get to work.”
